James Hallenbeck

Donation to The Nature Conservancy, October 2, 2024

My friend James Hallenbeck would be celebrating his birthday tomorrow, October 3, if he hadn't been taken from this world in a random act of violence. I have no doubt that if he were still here, a group of us would spend the night around his firepit, listening to music and eating something weird he had fermented. He loved nature. He loved music. And so many people loved him.

On August 19, 2024, I pledged to donate proceeds from my Patreon for a month to The Nature Conservancy in his honor.

I am so thankful to everyone who contributed to my Patreon from August 19-September 19. With your support, I was able to donate $875.00 in his honor.

James was an incredible musician, maybe most known for playing the accordion in metal bands. His talents were undeniable. Today I will be listening to his band Enemy of the Rose. You can also find them on Spotify if you would like to listen.

If you'd like to donate directly to James' Scholarship Fund, you can do so here.

Thank you all. And especially, thank you to James who made me care more about the world.

Body Double (1984)

Is Brian De Palma's Body Double Any Good?? ft. Hughezy, October 1, 2024

From the mind of director Brian De Palma comes Body Double, a suspenseful thriller that blurs the line between obsession and reality. Hughezy joins me to discuss this dark tale following Jake Scully, a struggling actor who, after a bizarre series of events, finds himself drawn into a web of voyeurism, murder, and intrigue. When he begins spying on a beautiful woman through a telescope, he witnesses what appears to be a brutal crime. But as Jake dives deeper, he uncovers a twisted conspiracy that could cost him everything. Starring Craig Wasson, Melanie Griffith, Gregg Henry, and Deborah Shelton, this gripping homage to Hitchcock’s Rear Window, Body Double is filled with unexpected twists, striking visuals, and a haunting score. But how do we feel about this iconic '80s psychological thriller?

Cape Fear

The OG 'Cape Fear' || Movie Review ft. Cinema Trip Reviews, September 17, 2024

This week Wyatt from ‪Cinema Trip Reviews‬ and I talk all about the ORIGINAL Cape Fear movie!

Cape Fear is a 1963 thriller about Sam Bowden (Gregory Peck), a small-town lawyer, who becomes the target of Max Cady (Robert Mitchum), a violent ex-convict seeking revenge. Believing Sam is responsible for his imprisonment, Cady terrorizes the Bowden family using intimidation and violence to provoke them all. As Cady's threats escalate, Bowden tries to protect his family while dealing with the limits of the legal system.

We go through the differences between J. Lee Thompson's 1963 classic original and the much more graphic and explicit themes of Martin Scorsese 1991 remake. So pull out those car keys, rent a houseboat, and find as many Simpsons references as you can!

Coneheads

Maintain Low Tones! CONEHEADS (1993) Movie Review, September 10, 2024

This week we look at one of the most underrated SNL skits turned feature film movies of our time. We'll also dive into the pilot episode of the animated television series.

Coneheads is a SNL birthed 1993 sci-fi comedy about a family of pointy headed aliens Beldar (Dan Aykroyd), Prymaat (Jane Curtain), and later their daughter Connie (Michelle Burke) from the planet Remulak who crash-land on Earth and try to blend in with humans.

The Coneheads encounter hilarious situations as they navigate the strange ways of earth but ultimately enjoy the planet so much that they consider staying, even more so after they return to their home planet and face serious accusations of capping their sharp teeth to assimilate with the human blunt skulls!

Earthling cameos are aplenty with appearances by Sinbad, Jon Lovitz, Michael Richards, Eddie Griffin, Phil Hartman, Adam Sandler, Jason Alexander, Drew Carey, Kevin Nealon, Ellen DeGeneres, and Tim Meadows.

So gather around your favorite evening consumption of mass quantities and let's watch Ronnie (Chris Farley) get his mind blown by Connie's ability to inhale a CGI Subway sandwich. Don't let mom and dad catch you with their Sensorings!

Zardoz is set in a dystopian future, where society is divided between the immortal Eternals, who live in a luxurious, controlled environment, and the barbaric Brutals, who inhabit the wasteland outside. The story follows Zed (Sean Connery), a Brutal who is mysteriously chosen by the god-like entity Zardoz to infiltrate the Eternals' realm. As Zed navigates this seemingly perfect society, he uncovers the dark truths behind their immortality and the oppressive control maintained by the Eternals.

In Memory

James Hallenbeck, August 21, 2024

Two years ago today, my friend James Hallenbeck was taken from this world.

As I sit here to write this post, I can't find the words to describe him and how much he meant. Ironically, James had such careful consideration that if he were here, he would know exactly what to say.

James was an incredible musician, maybe most known for playing the accordion in metal bands. His talents were undeniable. Today I will be listening to his band Enemy of the Rose. You can also find them on Spotify if you would like to listen.

I will be donating the money that I make on Patreon this month to The Nature Conservancy in his honor. If you have ever considered joining my Patreon but haven't, I would greatly appreciate you do now, just for a month.

If you'd like to donate directly to James' Scholarship Fund, you can do so here.

James - Thank you for inspiring me. I miss your cooking, and your laugh, and how complete you made the world feel.

Terrifier 2

Is 'Terrifier 2' (2022) as Terrifying as the First??, August 6, 2024

Horror fans!! It's been awhile since we've talked about a straight up horror movie, but luckily Art the Clown is back for Terrifier 2!

Terrifier 2 (2022) is a slasher film written, directed, edited and produced by Damien Leone. This is the sequel to the 2016 Terrifier, and I'm sure we're all getting excited for the release of Terrifier 3!

It includes the return of David Howard Thornton as Art the Clown and stars Lauren LaVera, Elliott Fullam, Sarah Voigt, Kailey Hyman and Casey Hartnett.

After Art is resurrected, he's back to his old antics, this time focusing largely on Sienna and her younger brother Jonathan. With a good combination of humor and gore, this one is a can't miss (Unless you hate gore. Or clowns. In which case... This might be rough for you).

Getting Lucky

Getting Lucky Movie Review, July 30, 2024

What a weird movie!

This might be one of the most bonkers films I've EVER covered, and I couldn't have done it without Bad at Karate who not only suggested this one, but joined me to review it!

Complete with a drunken leprechaun, a pro-recycling message, a battle between a nerd and jock over a cheerleader, AND OF COURSE the weirdest pool noodle scene I can possibly imagine (no... they aren't used as pool noodles... yes... they are a mimicking a type of hair...), this movie is wild.

Directed by Michael Paul Girard and finding distribution from Troma Entertainment, this 1990 movie asks the question: What three wishes would you ask an alcoholic leprechaun for?

Unfrosted

What's the Deal With UNFROSTED (2024)??? ft. Karl and Jenny Jingles, July 23, 2024

Jerry Seinfeld's 2024 monstrosity of a film Unfrosted dives in to the (fake) origin story of the Pop-Tart. I'm joined by Karl and Jenny Jingles from Who Are These Podcasts? while we dive into all the pitfalls of this movie. With cameos from just about every actor/comedian in Hollywood, to bad puns, this movie has it all.

The Book of Henry

THE BOOK OF HENRY is the worst movie ever. July 23, 2024

When I'm not giving movies the Once Over here, I am a co-host on 'Who Are These Podcasts?' Sometimes WATP fans send me amazing mail which I review that on Patreon, but when I received a copy of The Book of Henry (2017), I couldn't help but giving it the Once Over because it is SO AWFUL that I needed to talk about it. Please enjoy this little BONUS review that's a bit different than my normal reviews here on YouTube. You can see more mail reviews, popsicle review and early movie review releases on my Patreon.
